A DSLR camera is like our brain – whirring away capturing memories and processing the world around us – and a lens is definitely like our eyes, picking out all of the fine detail that that world has to offer. However, we have a problem. Our eyes look at only a small area of the image and our brain fills in the rest of the surrounding detail. We’ll never be able to store the representation of the image in our minds with all the complexity of the processing that our eyes and brain has to offer.
As photographers we have a wide range of additional tools in our tool box that allow us to adjust, enhance and even change the image that we see through the lens. It enables our eyes to see what our brain creatively imagines. Sometimes you want to capture all of this visual detail and distill it into one shot, capturing all this beauty is something that Canon wide-angle lenses are sure to deliver on.
What optics to choose? Well there’s the versatility of highly popular Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 USM, a hugely popular with landscape photographers, and superb for capturing that important wide shot at a wedding. The lightweight build and constant aperture of f/2.8 makes it very desirable. Or there’s Canons EF 17-40mm f/4 L series lens, it’s lightweight and lets you explore those wide horizons without the feeling of being bogged down with photographic kit. Lastly on the line up (pictured above, centre front) we have the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM, please remember folks that EF-S lenses will not fit on full frame camera bodies. The 10-22mm EF-S is an ultrawide angle lens that is small in size and weight and is a fantastic fit for the landscape explorer
There’s no need to spend a fortune buying these lenses for yourself, especially when they may only come out of the camera bag once or twice a year, they can be hired from as little as £30 for a long weekend. So why spend hundreds on new glass when you can spend a little, and when you’ve finished with the lens, send it back, simple!
